Q: Why are they called microphone cables? Can I use them for pre-amp to power amp balanced audio interconnects?

These are XLR cables. Maybe they called them that because it the one of the most common uses for this type of cable. Either way - They will work to make a balanced connection between 2 pieces of equipment with balanced xlr in/out connections. I use mine to connect a pre amp to an Interface.

Q: I'm wondering if these can compare to Monster brand cables because the price is really good but I am a little skeptical.

I don't know about that, but I had them running from my cheap little Drop+ Grace DAC into my fairly cheap little Drop+ THX AAA789 headphone amplifier, and I had assumed they were working just fine. For the overall price of the little headphone set-up, I was content with it. There seemed to be a lot of information presented on a very dark (silent) background. All of that being said, the sound was actually somewhat sterile and fatiguing (too clear?). By random chance, I pulled out my 20 year old MusicMetre Signature solid core XLR interconnects from a box in the basement. Now, these were probably $100-150 cables at the times (mid grade I would say for audiophile thinking), but the improvement over the subject cables was astonishing. It's really hard to understand. On one hand, it warmed up the previously sterile sound making them far less fatiguing; but, on the other hand, it also presented even more layers of information (detail). Moral of the story, you (generally) get what you pay for.
