Some solutions are bad

I cannot express how frustrating this book is. Claude Spencer’s FE Mechanical Exam Prep Book 2025 is nothing more than a glorified formula sheet masquerading as a study guide. It boasts about offering practice problems, yet it completely fails to provide detailed solutions—meaning you have NO WAY to verify your approach, learn from mistakes, or understand complex concepts. What’s the point of including problems if you don’t bother to explain how to solve them?The explanations in the book are minimal at best, with barely any depth in concept review. It feels like it was thrown together with little thought or effort, just to cash in on desperate test-takers. Anyone using this as their primary study material is in for a rude awakening when they sit for the actual FE exam.If you’re serious about passing, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. There are far better resources that actually teach the material rather than dump equations on a page and call it a day. This book is a waste of time, money, and patience. Absolutely infuriating.

It has a decent structure to it, and is very useful in that it has 3 practice tests in it, so it gives a lot of good practice problems to run through, but understand when you're going through the problems these are not written by a professional test designer, and they are not peer reviewed. On average every 5-10 problems in the practice tests you will find one that is unclear, or only correct in certain conditions which aren't specified, and every 10-15 you'll find one that's just flat out wrong. As long as you know to double check the answers with another source, it's still useful for giving good practice material, but if you're using it as a source of truth, you're gonna have a bad day.

Great study tool

This book is honestly not useful as a resource. It does not teach you any of the concepts. Most of the time it just gives you equations and some background on why it is important but not how to use the equations are what things mean. The practice problems are also not that well aligned with actual NCEES problems.There are many typos and formatting issues, making it look unprofessional. I think it is better to save your money and purchase a PPI manual. PPI manual will actually go over each concept with practice problems and show you how to solve them.
