Heroes of Islam

When I first read this book over 10 yrs ago someone let me borrow it. I was so amazed and just loved the stories of these heroes. Now that I am older and learning, I recognize that one have to be careful with some information that is out there. Stick to traditional books check into everything you come across and don't take anything from anyone just off of face value.

"Heroes of Islam" by Dr. Mahmoud E. Sieny (2000), hardback, 324 pgs. This book presents biographies of 75 Muslim `heroes', each bio is between 3-4 pages in length (750-950 words). There are six broad categories: (1) The four Righteous Caliphs; (2) Other Companions of the Prophet; (3)Followers of the Companions; (4) Religious scholars; (5) Reformers; & (6) Scientists. You know who are included in the first group (including Ali ibn Abi Talib). The 2nd group include: Muttalib, al-As, Abbas, Umar, Masood, Salam, Auf, al-Ansari, al-Ghifari, Hurairah, al-Jarrah, al-Bahili, Yasir, al-Jamooh, Malik, Rabah, ibn Ali, al-Yaman, al-Walid, al-Aratt, Adiyy, Umair, Waqqas, al-Juma, al-Ashjai, al-Farisi, Obaidullah, Uthal, ad-Dawsi, Zaid, Haritah, Thabit al-Awwam, Khuwwailid, as-Siddiq, Salamah, Sufyan, Malhan, abi Bakr, al-Harith; whereas those in the 3rd group include: Aziz, al-Basri, Rabah, at-Tamimi, al-Qadhi, al-Shabi, Nussary, Ziyad; the 4th group are: an-Numan, Anas, ash-Shafii, Hanbal, al-Bukhari, & al-Nawawi; with the 5th group Reformers being: al-Ayyubi, abdus-Salam, Taymiyyah, al-Jawziyyah, abdul Wahhab, al-Afghani, Abduh; and the 6th group of Scientists are: Raihan al-Bayruni, Zakariyya ar-Razi, M. ibn Rushd, and ibn Khaldun. The bios present a short history of the adult life of these individuals, but lack any `critique' of these individual's actions. Sadly, there are no footnotes or sources or other references for supporting confirmation; the author states what the supposed `factoids' are about these individuals. There is no bibliography for further research. Respect the author, but verify with other sources -- if you are seriously interested in knowing about these heroes.

Definitely one to keep in the house. Even for children from ages 7+, they would enjoy reading this.
