DIY rear view camera for my Travel Trailer

I bought this camera and a few other parts to build a lower priced DIY rear view camera to use behind my 30 ft 5th wheel RV. Before I get into the details I want to say that having the camera looking behind my RV was amazing and it will be very hard to ever go backwards in time and not have a rear view camera when towing an RV. So the set up I used is as follows.Parts from Amazon:1. (1) RAAYOO Direct L002 170 Degree Wide View Angle back up Camera2. (1) EKYLIN 30 foot Car RCA DC Video Extension Cable3. (1) Electop Audio Video Gold RCA Female to Female Coupler Adapter4. (1) Youmei Car Backup Camera Realtime Video WiFi Transmitter5. (1) SPARKING DC 5.5 x 2.1mm Car Charger Power Supply Cord - 12v -24v 4FT Cigarette Lighter Male Plug to DC Connector 5.5 x 2.1mm Cable6. Plus you will need a tablet or smart phone to view the video image app. I used a tablet I already owned but the app also worked on my smart phoneI mounted the Reverse Backup Camera on the inside of the RV high up in the rear window of the fifth wheel using one of the window frame screws and then added the 30 foot Video Extension Cable to run from the camera up to the front of the RV where I connected it to the WiFi Transmitter on the inside of the RV which was powered by the 12 volt Car Charger Power Supply Cord. Luckily there was already a 12 volt outlet in the very front area of the RV. We install the extension cable between the camera and the transmitter before each trip and uninstall it after we arrive at each location. It takes just a minute to do. The cable just lays on the floor when underway. The reason the WiFi transmitter needs to be in the front of the RV is to reduce the distance and reduce signal interference from walls between the transmitter and the tablet located in the cab of my pick-up truck. After getting the WiFi transmitter linked to the tablet via the app, which was somewhat of a hassle, the system worked pretty well except for a few occasional cut outs and other unstable image problems. I mostly blamed these problems on Wifi interference and just accepted it as normal. I used this system for over one year and the image gradually became less stable. Finally the image was off more than it was on so I contacted the camera vendor, RAAYOO, through Amazon and complained. I really didn’t expect much from them since it had been 15 months since I purchased it and the camera was only $20 to begin with. To my surprise RAAYOO got back to me and had some suggestions regarding troubleshooting the problems. They thought that it was not a camera problem but a power supply intermittent ground problem. So the first thing I checked was the power supply. The power supply cord has a indicator light. And when I wiggled the plug, the light stayed on and steady. This ruled out the power supply itself . I then hooked the cables all back together and started wiggling the connections. Sure enough the image dropped out when the cable was wiggled. So I took out the 30 ft extension cable and hooked up the camera direct to the power supply cables. When wiggled the image was stable. I could not make it drop out. I hooked the extension cable back in and it became unstable again. So RAAYOO was right, the problem was a ground in the extension cable, so I ordered a new cable from a different manufacturer. I now am thinking that the extension cable was probably bad from the day I bought it and the problem just grew worse over time. The camera is working perfectly now that we figured it out thanks to the good support from RAAYOO. I am still enjoying my RV rear view camera and I think it is probably a better system than the factory units that try to transmit the WiFi signal all the way from the rear of the RV to the tow vehicle. It is just too far and too many obstacles for the WiFi to work well. I have not received any kind of compensation from RAAYOO or any other vendor for writing this review. I just hope it helps others troubleshoot their rear view camera issues.

Incredible value for the price

Amazing quality for the price! Comes with plenty of length of wiring to facilitate easy routing from the camera to the infotainment system head unit. Installed on a 2012 Jeep Compass with a Pioneer NEX head unit and tucked camera up above the license plate beneath the hatch handle. Wiring length was sufficient to route up through the OEM rubber wiring tube from the hatch to the body and had about 2ft remaining at the head unit. My only complaint is that the DC wiring that gets its power from the reverse lamp (to turn on the camera) could've been a longer. I had to splice in about 3ft of some 18awg wiring to make that connection from the tail lamp assembly to the DC input. For applications where the camera isn't in a hatch, it would have probably been long enough. But, for a $16 camera, it is amazing!

This is a cheap backup camera that appears to work OK.

For the asking price it is great. I don't have trouble seeing the picture day or night. I ran into an issue where my video has interference lines on the screen most of the time. Sometimes it clears up for a second but comes right back. I presume it's either the way I tapped into 12v to the camera or interference from something that the RCA cable runs parallel to like the fuel pump or whatever. The hole saw that comes with it worked perfectly into the plastic tail gate bezel that I installed the camera into. I lucked out with the 2009 Avalanche for the perfect spot to put it for a stealth install and I also lucked out that the camera cable JUST reaches under the tail gate for the perfect length.I bought this camera because it came with a long enough cord to get me under the vehicle and through the fire wall. I had about 1.5 feet worth of free RCA cord. Long story short, hopefully I won't back over anyone's kid now. I'm including photos of the camera mounted as well as the interference pattern I see when I've got the vehicle in reverse. The moment I got the camera installed we had a 32F snow storm and I couldn't see out of it when it got snow on it. I went home and put Rain-X on the glass lens and this helps. Rain rolls off of it and only forms in smaller droplets. So do yourself a favor and do that.

Great upgrade to your car

Great product! Enhanced my truck significantly. Easy to install and adjust. The camera quality is good and clear. The color day or night is also really good.

Specification on the Page are Not What the Product's Packaging Says

B074P45P7G's page description was corrected promptly after giving feedback. The camera's paperwork describes it as having CMOS at 600 TV Lines (960X956 pixels), adequate for many uses, but it may not work for a head unit requiring 1080p or 720p. I suspect that low rating and high returns in the comment section are because Amazon's page incorrectly listed it as 1080p (again, the CEO of the company changed it when I sent the company an email, which shows that the company is responsive to its customers if the customer reaches out to them. The camera is versatile in that by cutting one or two wires you can disengage either the reverse imaging (to make it a front camera instead of a rear camera) or remove the backing guide bars from being displayed in the image. It also comes with a pry tool, drill tool for soft bumpers, electrical connectors, and even a roll of electrical tape. I had to return it because it is not a 1080p or 720p camera, which is why my head unit that was looking for a 1080p camera had difficulty putting a proper image, but for many units and applications, this camera should work.
