DARK GIRLS is a fascinating and controversial film that goes underneath the surface to explore the prejudices dark-skinned women face throughout the world. It explores the roots of classism, racism and the lack of self-esteem within a segment of cultures that span from America to the most remote corners of the globe. Women share their personal stories, touching on deeply ingrained beliefs and attitudes of society, while allowing generations to heal as they learn to love themselves for who they are.

Good movie
It's unfortunate that colorism is prevelant in any community but namely for this one the black community. It still occurs to this day and it can no longer be blamed on white people. We've come too far to continue pointing blame, now the responsibility is on us to make the change, make others aware and correct others and stop the division. I don't like docs that pander to a certain populations or issue but don't don't lead in detail on how to make the change moving forward. This one was ok with being honest and talking about the problem being internal not just pointing blame on other races, I liked that. As the world constantly changes, I would like to see a follow up movie or update maybe including some of the girls interviewed as they're older to see where they are now and if their experiences within their community or outlook have changed

'A Very Interesting Yet Important Film About Dark-Skinned Women!'
I liked the film very much; I am a Black woman who appreciates the color of my skin as well as the beauty of it. 'Dark Girls' makes me appreciate Black people of ALL SHADES and dark-skinned women (and men) have nothing to be ashamed of themselves for the color of their skin. At times the film is a bit controversial with the history of African American people from 1619 to the present and that racism still exists in 2020 but as African Americans and Black people across the world we have to stop being prejudiced with our brothers and sisters (i. e. name calling). I cried when the women talked about using chlorine bleach and bleaching cream to make their skin look lighter. Then some of the men said they would not date dark-skinned women. Black is beautiful, no matter how light or dark you are!!! I am proud to be Black!!!

Your true love may be right in front of you, but you just can't see her!
Finally, the REAL story! Within the BLK male/female community, there's internal conflict. "HOLY PAPER BAG RULE, BATMAN!". Now, take this concept out of the movie's context, and apply this to the Philippines (for example). There are many BLK men who claim this is not an issue there (HELLO! Everyone, except U knows better!). Facts R facts, and the facts do NOT care about FEE-FEEs. And in this movie, there are a lot of feelings hurt over what the BLK community does to itself. The reasons behind it all are indeed heartbreaking. I cannot imagine many of the ladies in this movie being passed up by men from their own culture? They are ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING/GORGEOUS! BLK men all over... PLEASE WAKE UP, open your eyes. B/c you may be looking at your TRUE LOVE w/o realizing it b/c you just do not "see: her.

I liked it. I learned a lot from this movie
I liked it. I learned a lot from this movie. I will say that they seemed obsessed with being beautiful. I'm tired of so much importance being placed on beauty. I know it's terrible that people have told dark skinned people they are ugly. Most of the women in this movie were really attractive. They were way more attractive than the average person. The majority of American women are overweight so I don't think this movie really represented the kind of appearance related insecurities of most ladies. Telling girls they are beautiful all the time kind of perpetuates the idea that being pretty is the most important thing in the world. A girl doesn't need to have that seed planted in her brain at a young age that her real purpose should be finding a husband. We still have professors telling girls at ivy league schools that they should find a husband while in college.

Truth in pain?
Dark Girls sets out to address and further problematize longstanding issues of colorism, especially among Black women and girls. The documentary recounts real-life experiences "dark girls" have faced since childhood that in most instances have followed them through adulthood. The accumulation of messages - often mean and cruel - have shaped perceptions of beauty, self-esteem, and aspirations to a point of questioning ones worth. Beyond that, Dark Girls is a reminder of stratified society on a macro and micro level. While the documentary centers Black women and girls, the issue of skin-tone is not germane to Black people. However, it pushes viewers to consider how and from where are messages are generated and who controls them. I am reminded of how relevant Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark's work is more than a half-century later. Dark Girls is another tool that can help talk through why and where do we go from here? I recommend this film for parents/caregivers to explore independently and with their children.

Moving and Thought Provoking
A moving and thought provoking account of our experiences as African American women, and how we have been treated [historically] in the White culture. The women who had the courage to share their stories also talked about how they experienced racial hatred from other African Americans, and buying into the lie that we are of no value or worth because we aren't light skinned. The documentary discusses the issue of colorism from several aspects, and how it has affected women of color world wide. Stories from self hatred to coming to grips with the pain, and understanding that dark skin tone is beautiful. I would recommend this documentary to mentors to view with young African American girls, and afterward talk about the pressures and frustrations they may be experiencing. It is so important to validate our girls; love them, and teach them to love themselves. Eye opening. Healing begins with getting to the root of the pain. You can't be healed from what you're not willing to confront. All Dark girls are beautiful, so Dark Girls.......Rise!

Thorough documentary. Every household - white, black, ...
Thorough documentary. Every household - white, black, asian, etc .... should have this - mandatory. Gives an in depth understanding and relation to what history - past, present - future - has done - will do. Gives an in depth understanding of why we do what we do and think the way we think and what needs to be done to break the cycle. The 2nd part - Light Girls - also needs to be mandatory.

Excellent Video for Black History Month
The documentary is insightful and it shows how much White European standards of beauty impact on brown and black skinned people.
