best "visible" motor I ever put together~
and am still in the process of.unlike Revell's treturous "revamped" stripped down version fo their once great V-8 this Porsche engine comes with both a drive motor and LED spark plug lights. the directions are pretty clear(though sometimes the german/English translation is missing some detail in English) it also comes with extra springs and screws so if you loose one or the few you have backups. the timing is done as in a real Porsche mech garage with a timing tool(plastic of course) and timing pins making it quite easy to do. parts are rugged and of good quality from the skin that has almost no flash whatsoever except where it is torn off of the tree and the gears are immaculately done in a hard quality plastic of blue-black or black colors. very good quality. the price is high though for this. the timing is well done and the parts fit together well the base contains leads for the drive motor(aka startermotor) and the LED sparkplug lights. they are fitted neatly into two(separate) jack pins much as a headphone jack. The wiring for motor and distributor is easy the motor/drivegear box is pre assembled into a plastic sheething and screwed with tri-angle headed screws(which I wouild have rather had standard so I can fix it if it were a problem in future) the gears are greased already so no need to go plowing around in there.(I know for a fact I did some prodding in the gearbox ;) the distributor has a bevel that lines up with the column and timing is a clear cut job! the parts move freely without noise(by themselves) unlike Revell's abomination and its nasty flash under the cylinder bases! the only gripe I have(and it doesn't loose a star) is the motor/gearbox is quite noisy. nothing can be done about this as the motor needs the geared down gears inorder to turn a huge number of plastic parts. you can plasti-greese the gearbox but it makes very little difference.(make certain to remove the original factory oil from the gearbox first no mixing greeses!). the engine so far, as not been a difficult or eventful task but it is a lot of fun to put together to pass time whether you are 16 or 60! I am 48 and it is just as fun now as my old V-8 was in Christmas, 1980 when I was 10! of course Revell had sparkplug lights and a drive motor then and the parts were of higher quality! this engine is of that quality or more! for one thing no flash!

great gift!
This was the perfect gift; We got to build it together and learn a lot about engines in the process. Really fascinating to see it all working, and the result is a really cool interactive decoration. The book is a must-have for any Porsche enthusiast and really sets this kit apart from other models; the book would be a great gift by itself. The instructions were a little complicated in a couple spots, but not too hard. I highly recommend!

Great kit, good learning tool
Not only was this a fun kit to assemble, it’s attention to details actually teaches some fundamentals about how car engines work. It might be a bit of a challenge for kids, some assembly instructions were confusing.

Great kit, easy to assemble, nice display stand.
My most recent model engine build was a Renwal Visible V8, circa 1958. It was similar to this in that it had glowing sparkplugs and a motor. It took two days, partly because the 1950s era of plastic injection molding was terrible, in particular the gears would not mesh properly. I had to buy two kits just to get everything working and synchronized but there were lots of fiddly problems like the distributor, which you had to assemble yourself. With this sort of trauma I hoped 60 years of advancement would result in easier kits and I'm happy to say this kit is great. I was so relieved to find the distributor preassembled and the parts are molded with high precision. The manual was full of content with historical interest and it was fun to see the directions for assembling the cylinder head next to a vintage 1960s Porsche ad. The whole thing took less than two hours to put together and since it uses screws instead of glue or snaps it was easy to assemble. My one recommendation is to use alkaline rather than NiMH batteries as the lower voltage of the NiMH make the motor struggle a bit when operating.
