The Navy's Tartar missile was a short/medium range surface-to-air missile. It is essentially a Terrier HT-3 without a booster. First flown in 1958 and declared operational in 1962. The basic Tartar missile was designated as RIM-24A (seen here). It was effective within altitudes of 50-50,000 feet at distances between 2000 yards to 7.5 nautical miles. This approximately 1/8 sport scale model of the Tartar makes its debut as the commemorative kit for the 2010 National Sport Launch (NSL) in New Mexico. This model was selected because of its historic involvement in testing at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico not far from where NSL was held.
