Selina Lake Winter Living: An inspirational guide to styling and decorating your home for winter

I really wanted to love this book because I love the concept behind it. I was hoping it would be a rich source of winter decorating and entertaining in my own house. What it is, instead, is a nice-ish book on shabby chic style in a cold climate. There are simply not many ideas that someone NOT living in a shabby chic house can adapt to their own surroundings. Not only that, but many of the illustrations are simply photo vignettes of, say, a flower stuck in a vase (could be any season) or pillows scattered on an unmade bed... again, could be any season... or close-ups of fabric or the edge of a chair. I tried to like it! I looked at it over and over to give it the benefit of the doubt, but, in the end, I decided there were maybe 2 or 3 images that were adaptable for me. That's not enough to justify buying the book and I don't recommend it.

This is probably my favorite book by Selina Lake. A lot of ideas for making your home cozy and comforting for the winter. I live in a place with long, cold, snowy winters, so that is important. A few of the inspirational photos do seem a bit dreary and monochromatic to me though. With short days, and not much color outside, bright and cheery inside is helpful to alleviate the winter blues. She uses a lot of typical suggestions, like fires, candlelight, cozy throw blankets and rugs, and fairy lights, but they are typical because they do work.

I live in the Far North, and this book is my favorite book for the winter season. Instead of bright, sunny, defy-the-season pretend-its-summer decors, Lake features homes that enjoy what makes winter so wonderful. YES, this is a Shabby Chicesque take on interior design, but what's wrong with that? These rooms are elegant and cozy and livable. This is my new go-to book for winter themed rooms. Selena Lake "gets" winter. I appreciate that.

Beautiful book, I took it out again recently to think about winter decorating and to just enjoy it as the moody fall weather rolls in. Selina does so many pretty books. Great job Selina. xo
