Fun Game for Math Practice

We got this game because we homeschool and are always looking for fun ways to incorporate math practice into our day. We were surprised by how much of a challenge the game actually is, and it definitely tested mental math addition and subtraction skills in both the kids and adults! The game reminded us a bit of 5 Minute Dungeon in terms of the cooperative play and the race against the clock. Instead of monsters you defeat, there are goal cards to meet (i.e. lay down 4 cards in a row where the answers go in ascending order, answers can only be even numbers, etc.). Everyone has a hand of cards with addition and subtraction problems on them, and you are working together to use the answers to the problems to meet 3 goal cards at a time. Each time you play a card, you replenish your hand. Once you finish a goal, another goal is flipped over and gameplay continues until a 3 minute timer (not included) is over. You get points based on how many goals you completed (harder goals are worth more points). At the end of the game you can easily check your answers by looking on the back of the cards – there are little letters at the bottom right that will go in alphabetical order (for ascending goals) or backwards alphabetical order (for descending goals). While my kids know these math facts, having them in a game format with the goals was a challenge. My 10 year old struggles with answering under pressure, so we used some of the rules for younger players (removed the advanced cards and goals). We also decided to lay out the 3 goal cards only and then set a stop watch to see how fast we could meet those goals. My kids seemed to do better with this kind of timer rather than one that counted down. I think it depends on the child and how they do with timed games. My 8 year old personally would love the challenge if he were playing by himself. The game is fairly straightforward and we were able to jump right in after a quick reading of the rules. It says 8+ and I would agree. Depending on your child, if they know their addition and subtraction facts, they will be able to play this game with or without variations. The only thing I wish was included was a note on the lowest and highest answers possible in both the regular and advanced game. As we were playing, we were laying down cards with a certain total and not knowing if there were any cards in the deck with higher or lower answers. It would be helpful to know the limits for the cards so we could make the best decision on when to play certain cards - a minor quibble that you could figure out if you took a little time to peruse the deck before playing (FYI, 0 is the lowest; 21 and 25 are the highest for the regular/ advanced deck, respectively). All in all, a fun little math game that is sure to challenge kids and adults. This will be going into our math practice rotation for sure!

Good for kids. Trickier than you think.

Even though it's a game about simple addition and subtraction, because it's a timed race, you'll find it much trickier than you imagine. It's also a cooperative game - which makes it nice. Work together to place your cards in the right order depending on the Goal cards.See our full review on The Board Game Family website.

Math Rush Really Adds Up!

Let me start by saying that I am both a gameschooling mom and a math nerd! I'm also a pushover for cooperative games and timed games... so Math Rush hit all my highlights.I loved the interplay between strategy and number sense in Math Rush. The computation may come more easily for adults or older kids, but the strategy of deciding which cards to place with which goal, when to use the Help! Cards, and other choices is still compelling even if you know 18-3 without hesitation.I really appreciate Math Rush as a learning tool, because the strategy is fun for all ages, the cooperative goals help kids from feeling frustrated that they are losing, and because the creators were thoughtful enough to include a bit of differentiation in the rules and cards. It's a truly fun and quick way to practice some math facts and work on your number sense at the same time (is it likely that you'll be able to find enough lower cards to finish your goal if you start with 5+1?). Three rounds of just three minutes each are enough to give a bit of skill building time without feeling overwhelming. The cards and instructions are colorful and bright and it's easy to learn and get started playing. I'm also glad to see that the box is clearly marked "Volume 1," which makes me anticipate more volumes covering other math skills in the future!

Fast thinking math game

My son and I played Math Rush and it was great. It helps you to think on your feet and apply several logic steps at one time. I hope that they come out with a multiplication version because it definitely reinforces your math facts and being able to apply them quickly. It's nice that the game is cooperative, because we can talk through strategy together. We reached the second scoring level on our first game, so I'm hopeful that we will continue improving with each time we play!

Good idea, but too difficult

This game was within my older daughter's age range but it was too difficult for her to enjoy. We all seemed to not get very far because unless everyone does well quickly the game isn't fun.

Cooperative Math!

I really enjoy cooperative games and this one is a good one to practice math facts. It’s set as a race against the clock but can easily be adjusted to be competitive or less rushed. The cards are simply color coded for addition vs subtraction facts. My 5 year old was interested in the game and I was able to easily take out hard math equation and play a simpler version with her for now. I love that this game has so much playability over time.

Now this is how you play with flashcards!

Oh man, my brain was a mess with this game. I felt like my kids were able to keep their cool better than me. This game was fun and stressful bc of the timer, but well worth it. Great practice for all of us with addition and subtraction facts. I like that you can remove some of the harder problems so that I was able to play with a bigger variety of skill levels.
