Happy in Our Skin

I Purchased this for my daughter, after she came home from pre-school telling us that her face was not perfect. After talking with her and her cousin, we were made aware that she was being bullied in class by two other little girls. They only permitted her to play with certain dolls.We purchased this book, (along with other books), and we read it to her every night. She loves it! In short, this book affirms who we all are, and introduces that concept at an early age.We talked to the teacher and resolved this issue. We purchased a second copy for her class, and it is read regularly by her pre-school teacher to the entire class. It has become a class favorite. Her class is racially diverse, with 3 whites, 1 Hispanic (also white), 2 African Americans / blacks, and 4 Asians (1 from china and 3 from India). I was surprised that the school did not already have a similar book. My daughter (as all children) is perfect!

I bought this book for my friends who just adopted a baby who is a different racial background than they are. I was hoping this book was about being okay with who you are no matter your skin color, but it’s not. It’s mostly, literally, about skin. And it’s only a few pages long. Lame. I did like that one of the families in the book was same-sex so that’s what got it 2 stars.

The title Happy in Our Skin by Fran Manushkin, illustrated by Lauren Tobia pretty much captures the message of this book. Richly diverse illustrations capture children and their families in various activities. Readers will notice that regardless of ethnicity, culture or physical ability, families interact and love the same. Children will also learn that skin has important function: “It keep the outsides out and the insides in.” All people have this in common. Skin presents obvious differences as well: color, texture, freckles, dimples, even goose pimples.Happy in Our Skin can create an easy opportunity to have some important conversations about race. We bought this book to help support our 3-year-old's preschool's work during the Black Lives Matter in Education Week of Action! This book was perfect for that age range as an introduction to talking about race and skin tones. And the fact that the main family depicted appears to subtly have two moms just like us was extra meaningful to our family! Love this book and am very pleased to add it to our home library.

This is a book that should be read to kids from the time they are babies. Let’s stop the divisiveness from birth

Some children's books that cover different races can be pretty intense and IMHO may even create negative opinions about race/equality/etc. But this one is good, positive vibes. Nothing harsh or intense. No direct mention of races, just being happy with who we are. Good for toddlers!

Our 20 month old loves this book. Charming, sweet and easy to follow, it has quickly become her go to book requesting "happy skin." A great addition to our library.

I love the start of this book. The Illustrations are great. I purchased this book thinking it was about being comfortable in your skin (with different races). The first few pages are about that, but most of the book is about actual skin and is slightly odd.Overall it's an okay kids book but you should be aware its about the workings of skin and may not be what you expect.

My daughter loves this book. She often points at all the different coloured babies and loves their diversity. The rhymes have great rhythm too
