Excellent, high quality
Use this when your fine knife edge is folded or lightly dinged. I can shave hair afterward. Don’t cut yourself. This is not Chinese junk.

I love it, 6 swipes on the stone and it ...
Finally a stone that works. Ok so really I have been using that less than favorable metal honing thing that came with an old set of knives for years Just began purchasing some much higher quality knives and ran across this. I was not familiar with ceramic but what the heck gave it a shot. I love it, 6 swipes on the stone and it polished up the edge on an old high carbon blade. It worked well on my stainless as well. The cost was great and this will get use after each use of the knives, a great way to keep them sharper longer. Recommended!

works good so far...
pulled this thing out of the box and immediately took it to my 6" wusthof chef's. man, this thing put a nice edge on that knife. tried it on a forstner and some of my chicago cutlery steak knives and it put a real nice edge on them too. definitely better than my steel hone. works good so far...because i bought this to keep my shun knives sharp which i just sent to the factory for sharpening. sure, it works great on that soft german steel, but we'll have to see how it does up against the hardened cobalt japanese stuff. 4 stars because the handle is sized for a child. i have XL hands and this thing is a full inch short of the full width of my hand. i guess if you want a full size hilt you have to spend the outrageous cash for a global. will update in a while when the shun's begin to get dull. so i'll be back in 6 months or so!

Works better than a metal rod
The Seisuke Japanese knife store in town told me that a ceramic rod works a lot better than a metal rod for Japanese knives which use harder steel. They are right. I like this one since it’s cheaper than what the knife shop has in store and the wooden handle feels good to hold.

Great Value!
I've been very impressed with this sharpening rod. It's a great product, but more importantly it's a great value. Before buying this product, I priced ceramic sharpening steels around the Toronto area [where I live] and came away appalled at how much places were charging. They commonly ranged in price from $50-150, and none were much different than this one. I recently compared this rod to a $150 Global ceramic sharpening rod, and couldn't find much difference in the ceramic surface. The difference was that the Global rod featured their signature metal handle, and a giant rubber guard at the top of the handle. The finger guard on the Mac rod is quite trim, but I have yet to really see any need for a giant rubber guard. If you are really so concerned about cutting down into the handle and catching your fingers, you don't need a $150 rod, you need to change your technique.

Great value, works well
I have several ceramic honing rods and they all do a great job of keeping your knives sharp. This one is more compact than others I have but I have no problem honing long chef's knives on it. It is light weight and comfortable to hold, and a great value for the price. Much better than a steel, and cleans easily with a sponge and any abrasive cleaner when metal starts to accumulate.
