Jazz Chord Breakthrough
I've completed about 6 Jazz related chord books over the past year and this one is by far the best, but it is not easy!Whereas most of the other chord books focus on about 4 "most common" types of chords (Maj7, m7, 7 & m7b5) and their extensions, or just a huge listing of thousands of shapes (sometimes redundant in every key), this book focuses on 15 types of chords (Maj6, m6, Maj7, m7, 7, m7b5, m7#5, Maj7b5, Maj7#5, 7b5, 7#5, min/Maj, 7sus4, Dim7th & 7#9) in all inversions of Drop2 (string sets 5-2 & 4-1) and Drop3 (bass on 6th & 5th strings). The section on pluralities also shows that each of these 15 chords function as other chord types too.The comping aspect incorporated various Jazz rhythms into playing these chords, which made it more fun and musical than other chord books I've seen. The sections where chord changes were to be made in the inversion nearest to the previous chord made me want to cry in agony, but vastly improved my ability to perform from lead sheets, finding chords in the "neighborhood", not having to jump around and look at the guitar neck. This book requires work, but if you make it through you will be a better musician!
