Good USB to RS232 adapter
This was one of two cables I bought to replace a lost prolific adapter. Mine was green and my PC identified it as a HL340.Plug and play, I plugged it into my PC running Windows 7 64 bit. Windows automatically downloaded a driver and within 10 seconds of plugging it in for the first time it was ready for use. The next day I used it to program a fire alarm panel and change the message on a voice evac. This cable did the job at 128k per second, the fastest rate of the RS 232 standard. If you plug it into a different usb port, Windows will assign a different COM port. Use the same USB to get the same port. Speed and COM port can be changed under device manager/ COM ports/ device properties/ advanced. The other cable I bought turned out to be counterfeit. The other cable worked for a few minutes on a PC with XP 32, and not at all on my Win 7 64.Update 2/23/13 My new laptop has Windows 8 64, this cable was plug and play. No problems.

Doesn't work.
Lets see you connect it, the computer sees it and gives you a serial port that will not connect to any device you connect up to it. Basically it says I'm here but you can't use me.

Version I got uses a Prolific PL2303
I had ordered another USB DB9 cable which used a Nanjing QinHeng Electronics CH341 chip. An Ubuntu 11.10 box recognized the CH341 chip but was useless on a Mac running OSX 10.6.8 since there are no drivers available for the CH341 chip for OSX.This version received on April 28, 2012 was recognized immediately by both Ubuntu 11.10 and OSX 10.6.8 as a Prolific PL2303 (the mac already had the PL2303 driver installed from another serial cable I was using). I got an AT DB9/DB25 modem cable from another company so this should be good for using an old analog modem for faxing and auto dialing on either OS.after plugging in the cable, Ubuntu 11.10 output fromdmesg | tailusb 2-1: new full speed USB device number 6 using ohci_hcdUSB Serial support registered for pl2303pl2303 2-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detectedusb 2-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303pl2303: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driverThere is a mini CD that comes with the package stored between the fold of the cardboard insert but I didn't bother with it. Ubuntu already has the pl2303 kernel module and autoloads it when the cable is plugged in. If you need the drivers, it's probably better to download it from Prolific's site, just Google "pl2303 driver" and you'll get the link to the company's download page.

had issues with drivers.
Not that great had issues with his and Secure CRT for some reason, PUTTY work better, it is like the drivers are not that great, I would avoid. I used this item on Cisco switches, routers, and Brocade devices with adapter dongle from Brocade, but had issues with drivers.

Worked after some hackin'
Tried an 85 dollar version from Best Buy of a similar cable first, it just was plug and play on my windows 8. This one even after deleting drivers and then re-installing them from the CD didn't work. (On Windows 8) Eventually was able to find a folder on the cd that came with it that had proper drivers. Windows will try to install drivers right away when you plug it in which don't work, you have to cancel that. Then go into your device manager, find the it on there, go into its options, install a new driver, browse the folders on the CD...and I don't have the CD in front of me, but I know I had to try a few to find one that worked for Win8. Once that was all setup I was good to go.

An excellent retro-part for an up-to-date laptop (no seriial port)
The product is exactly as advertised, just what I needed, and the most reasonably priced of its kind. The supplier assured prompt delivery and I was able to put the cable to use wihtin minutes of opening the package.

SUCKS don't buy it
Thanks for nothing, jackwagons. Product title says "MAC" in it. later on in the product section, says 'doesn't support OSX 10.6 or above'. THAT'S CRAP. Mac updates itself, and now I have a piece of junk to go next to my OTHER piece of junk that doesn't work (which is why i bought this in the first place. the only plus side is it costs .80 cents.JUNK.

Not for the item
I am not writing this review for the item. The item i never got a chance to use. I am writing this review for the customer service that i got. I receive this item and was ready to use it but it didnt work. I didnt contact the seller about a return but figured it wouldn't be worth the return shipping considering i bought it so cheap. I just left a negative review. They then emailed me saying that they saw me negative review and wanted to know what they could do to help. I told them the item did not work and it would not be worth shipping it back for a refund. They told me that they would be willing to refund my money without me sending back the item because it was a small item and was not very expensive. This costumer service makes me want to buy from them again. Thanks for the no hassle refund.
